Number Forty-Three: Mo Vaughn.
Mo Vaughn played on some pretty unremarkable teams. They weren't awful teams--they weren't the type of team that you would pretend to believe in when you really knew that they didn't stand a chance--they just weren't good enough. With the exception, of course, of the 1992 team; save Clemens, they were just bad. There were good teams as well; they got to the playoffs in 1995 and 1998. But mostly they were heartbreak teams.
But the man could hit (and, yes, he was accused of purchasing HGH in 2001) and he was well-liked. He's intelligent and well-spoken. He's charitable. He seemed happy enough at the time to be the front man for the Sox. His relationship with the front office went south in 1998 and he departed for the Angels.
